Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social, Music, Plant Sale and Historic Photos At The Errea House
Held at the Historic Errea House, the public had an opportunity to view some of the photos from the Tehachapi Heritage League’s archives. Many of the photos have not been exhibited by the museum since the 1970’s, and others have never been seen publicly before. The opening of the exhibition coincided with the Ice Cream Social.
The Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social was held on Thursday, June 22nd, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Historic Errea House, located at 311 Green Street. Attendees built their own ice cream sundae, or just had a scoop of delicious Baskin Robbins Ice Cream! Over five large tubs of ice cream were sold!
Musicians performing on the front porch, courtesy of Debby Hand and Mountain Music, allowed listeners to sit a spell and enjoy old-time music. It was also a treat to stroll through the 1900s era Errea Garden and to visit the museum and see the new displays that have been installed.
In the garden and on the porch, plants from the Errea Garden, plus vintage furniture and garden antiques from a local antiques collector were for sale. There were plant containers and the exclusive Errea House Potpourri created by Rose Mary Wilson for sale.
New comers enjoyed see the photo exhibition, learning more about the rich heritage that has brought Tehachapi from its early days, as a small stop along the tracks, to the growing city it is today, and to meet some of the local Tehachapi folks.
“Moments in Time” is an ongoing series of photographs of the people and events that shaped the Tehachapi Valley, presented in a themed exhibition from the League’s extensive collection of photographs, most of which have been donated by collectors as well as individuals. Nick Smirnoff, with a vast knowledge of photography, is serving as curator for this special showing of photographs. That makes “Moments in Time” a unique opportunity to see this photographic record, which includes candid shots, studio photos and publicity stills. Little is known about many of the photos, and visitors were asked to write their comments, so that we can add those remembrances to the record of each photograph.
Furniture and items from the small collection already assembled to furnish the Errea House from the 1900 to 1930 period were also exhibited, along with other interesting artifacts.
Other categories of photos will be added for the Museum’s 33rd Anniversary Celebration on the 4th of July, and for Mountain Festival on August 19th & 20th. Special showings by appointment can be arranged during the summer for civic, social and other interested groups.
Copies of many of the photos will be available for purchase by special order, as one objective of the exhibition is to make the photos more accessible to the public. Anyone who wishes to donate photographs to the collection or to get more information about the event, please call Charles White at 661-821-4816. |
